To design your website, I will discuss with you the most logical layout and page categories based on your supplied text. For images, you may supply your own or purchase professional stock photography and images from websites such as iStockphoto and Shutterstock. You and I then get into following my website design process.
Website design involves taking your text, images and other files and putting them into a format that web browsers can understand and present to your website users. You may even already have a mock-up of your website created in Photoshop or a similar program. I can take your Photoshop mock-up and convert it into working website files; this process is called PSD to HTML. At the core of a website is a text file written in a language called HTML (HyperText Markup Lauguage), you can view a web page's HTML file by selecting "view source" in your web browser. The HTML file dictates the content that will form the web page. The web page content is then displayed in the browser according to rules specified in a language called CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). CSS can be written into the HTML document file, but I think it is best practice to place CSS for a website into a separate file(s) and link them to the HTML file. The HTML passed to the browser can be manipulated by using a scripting language that writes different HTML based on certain inputs, interactions etc. I use languages called PHP (PHP Hypertext Preprocessor) and JavaScript to dynamically write the HTML code to the user's browser. On occassion, these scripts may need to interact with a database; I build databases using SQLite and MySQL database systems.
To build your web design, I hand code all the neccessary files in a text editor like Notepad and amend any images so they are fast-loading in your website users' web browsers. Good, clean code is vitally important in ensuring your website loads quickly, is easily indexed by search engines and meets website accessibility and standards criteria. Throughout the design process, your website is tested in several web browsers to ensure it is compatable and appears as intended.
